Hello Spartans!
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, with today being World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or background. Since 1999, suicide rates in the United States have risen more than 30% with the rate in North Carolina increasing over 12% in the same period. It can be frightening if someone you love talks about suicidal thoughts. It can be even more frightening if you find yourself thinking about dying or giving up on life. Knowing the warning signs and ways to support individuals through conversation and crisis resources are the first steps in saving a life.
Warning Signs (from the National Alliance on Mental Illness)
- Increased alcohol and drug use
- Aggressive behavior
- Withdrawal from friends, family and community
- Dramatic mood swings
- Impulsive or reckless behavior
Local & National Resources (24 hours a day, 365 days a year)

Sometimes a simple conversation that promotes openness and honesty can be a difference maker. Showing support and concern encourages individuals to see that they are not alone in their fight.
